Getting paid to care for a family member in Manitoba
Manitoba's Self and Family Managed Care (SFMC) is delivered through the Regional Health Authorities. On paying relatives, RHA policy is narrow rather than open: hiring family members is "not allowed except in unique circumstances and with the approval of" the Regional Health Authority. That is an exception route requiring approval — not a general yes. If this is your plan, raise it with your case coordinator early.
Who qualifies
- • A Manitoba resident registered with Manitoba Health.
- • An assessed home care need.
- • Care needs that exceed the support available from family and the community.
- • Must already qualify for home care services.
How the funding works
Funding is individually assessed based on your assessed care needs — there is no fixed published figure. SFMC comes with accountability attached: you are subject to semi-annual reporting and to audit, so keeping clean records of hours, payments, and receipts is part of the arrangement rather than optional.
How to apply
- • Ask your Home Care Case Coordinator about SFMC.
- • In Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority intake line is 204-788-8330. Other regions have their own RHA intake lines — contact the health authority for the area where the person receiving care lives.
- • Complete the SFMC application.
- • Open a separate bank account to hold and track the funds.
