Getting paid to care for a family member in the Northwest Territories
What the pilot was
The pilot paid a family or community caregiver for up to 4 hours per week of practical support, such as:
- • Cleaning and household upkeep.
- • Meal preparation.
- • Hauling wood and snow removal.
- • Errands and shopping.
It ran in a limited set of communities: Behchokǫ̀, Dettah, N'Dilo, Yellowknife, Tuktoyaktuk, and Hay River. It was never a territory-wide entitlement.
What to do now
Contact NTHSSA directly and ask whether any successor program exists or is planned, and what home and community care support is available where you live. Do not assume the pilot is still open. If a replacement program is announced, this guide will be updated.
What else to look at
Federal tax credits and benefits still apply regardless of territorial programs, and keeping a clear record of caregiving hours and expenses makes those claims easier. The benefits checker below is a practical next step.
