Getting paid to care for a family member in Ontario
Ontario's Family-Managed Home Care (FMHC) gives approved families funding they can use to purchase home care services or employ care providers directly. The important limit: it is available only to specific groups, not to any family caregiver who applies. Treat it as a narrow option to check eligibility for, rather than a general route to being paid.
Who qualifies
You must first qualify for traditional home care and have a care plan from Ontario Health atHome. On top of that, the person receiving care must fall into one of these groups:
- • Children with complex medical needs.
- • Adults with acquired brain injuries.
- • Eligible home-schooled children.
- • Patients in extraordinary circumstances.
Where a substitute decision-maker is involved, that person is also assessed as part of the process.
How the funding works
Funding is individually assessed according to the approved care plan. You then take on responsibility for arranging services or employing providers, along with the administration that involves.
How to apply
Speak to your Ontario Health atHome care coordinator. An assessment and an approved plan of service are required before Family-Managed Home Care can be considered.
