Getting paid to care for a family member in Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan offers Individualized Funding for Home Care, which lets the person receiving care arrange and manage their own supportive services and hire caregivers as their employees. It is not clearly documented as a way to pay an immediate family member — the program is written around becoming an employer of hired caregivers. Ask your Home Care program directly before assuming a relative can be paid.
Who qualifies
- • Assessed as having long-term supportive care needs.
- • Willing to accept employer responsibilities, including Workers' Compensation coverage for anyone you hire and compliance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act.
How the funding works
Funding is individually assessed — there is no fixed published figure. You receive funds to purchase the supportive services identified in your assessment, and you take on the recruiting, scheduling, payroll, and record-keeping that come with being an employer.
How to apply
Contact the Saskatchewan Health Authority Home Care Program in your community. An assessment of care needs comes first; individualized funding is then discussed as a way of delivering the approved plan.
