Financial help for autism caregivers in Australia
Australian carers of an autistic person may qualify for Carer Payment, Carer Allowance, or both, through Services Australia. Carer Gateway is the national service for support, counselling, and respite navigation.
What support exists in Australia
There are very few autism-only payments in these systems. Autism families usually claim through the same general disability and caregiver programs everyone else uses.
Carer Payment
An income-support payment for people who cannot work full-time because of their caring role. Up to $1,200.90 a fortnight for a single person and $905.20 a fortnight each for partnered carers, effective 20 March 2026.
Income and asset tested. It is designed to replace wages for full-time carers, not to sit on top of them.
Carer Allowance
A supplement of $162.60 a fortnight for carers providing daily care. It is non-taxable and can be received alongside Carer Payment.
Subject to a family income test of $250,000.
Carer Supplement
An annual payment of $600, paid automatically in July to people receiving a qualifying carer payment. You do not apply for it separately.
Child Disability Assistance Payment
An automatic annual payment of up to $1,000 per eligible child under 16, paid if you are getting Carer Allowance for a period that includes 1 July. There is no separate claim.
If you care for more than one eligible child, you can receive a payment for each of them.
NDIS and the early childhood approach
The NDIS is not autism-specific — eligibility depends on meeting the disability or early-intervention requirements, not on the diagnosis alone. The early childhood approach currently supports children under 6 with developmental delay and children under 9 with disability, connecting them and their families with the right early supports.
Carer Adjustment Payment
A one-off payment of up to $10,000 for exceptional circumstances, where a child under 7 is diagnosed with a severe disability or severe medical condition following a catastrophic event and the family does not qualify for other government income support.
It must be claimed within 2 years of the diagnosis.
Carer Gateway
The national navigation and support service for carers — counselling, peer support, coaching, and help finding respite and practical services in your area.
If you're a parent of an autistic child
Parents of autistic children are a large share of Australian carer claims. Services Australia assesses the level of care the child needs day to day, so information from the treating health professional about support needs — not just the diagnosis — is what carries the claim. Carer Gateway is worth contacting separately for respite and coaching, whatever happens with the Centrelink claim. For parents of autistic children specifically, Carer Allowance plus the Child Disability Assistance Payment are usually the most direct, least complicated route to check first — they sit outside the NDIS and don't require the NDIS process. NDIS and Thriving Kids eligibility depends heavily on the child's age and assessed support-needs level.

Thriving Kids and the NDIS changes (2026–2028)
Two different changes are often described as if they happen at the same time. They don't — the new services and the eligibility rule change have separate dates.
Thriving Kids services begin
Thriving Kids services start rolling out for children aged 8 and under with developmental delay and/or autism with low to moderate support needs. It is an additional, non-NDIS pathway, delivered by states and territories and jointly funded, with $4 billion committed over 5 years.
NDIS access eligibility change takes effect
The NDIS access eligibility rule change for this age group does not take effect until 1 January 2028. Children already enrolled in the NDIS before that date will be reassessed under the eligibility criteria that applied before 1 January 2028.
Children with permanent and significant disability, including high support needs, remain eligible for the NDIS throughout — this change does not affect them.

Who in the family can claim
You can claim carer payments for a child, partner, parent, or another person you care for, as long as the care-needs and residency requirements are met. Whether you're related does not by itself decide the claim — the level of care needed and the income and asset tests do.
