Getting approved for the Disability Tax Credit, the Canada Caregiver Credit, or a provincial caregiver stipend is a real win — but it's not the finish line. Certificates expire. Records get reviewed. And most families have no idea what they're supposed to be keeping track of in the meantime.
What you actually need to keep
Approval is a decision made on the information available at the time. Afterwards, the CRA — or whichever authority approved you — can come back and ask you to show your work. That usually means receipts for what you spent, a record of the care you actually provided, and the medical documentation that supported the claim in the first place.
Many caregiver benefits also aren't permanent. Certificates can expire, approvals can be granted for a set period, and some programs ask you to recertify or re-apply. Requirements vary by program, province and country, and they change over time — so the safest assumption is that at some point, someone will ask.
That's the part families rarely plan for. The application gets all the attention; the years afterwards get none.
