Accessing Public Home Support & Respite in BC

An older adult and family members review information together at home

When caring at home becomes harder, public home and community care may be one route to explore. Start with the health authority serving the person’s home. Its team assesses needs and decides eligibility, available services and any client fees. An enquiry does not guarantee funded support or a particular start date.

Lower Mainland: Fraser Health

Families in Surrey, White Rock and Langley can start with Fraser Health home support services. Ask how to access assessment and discuss the everyday support the person needs. The Surrey–North Delta home and community care access information is another official starting point. Public nursing and non-clinical private support are different services.

Vancouver Island: Island Health

Read Island Health’s home support and support and respite for caregivers pages. Its Community Access Lines can discuss next steps: South Island 1-888-533-2273, Centre Island 1-877-734-4101, North Island 1-866-928-4988. These are Island Health contacts, not FeatherKeep phone numbers.

Public and private are separate routes

Private support can complement the home support you already receive through Fraser Health or Island Health. FeatherKeep is an independent private provider. The health authority decides public eligibility and funding; FeatherKeep’s private-pay services are arranged separately.

Before calling, note the person’s location, daily routines, support already in place and where the family needs a break. Confirm current eligibility, fees and availability directly with the authority. For private care, your care needs, schedule, price and suitable local worker are confirmed before support begins.
