When someone you care about needs more support at home

Care needs rarely arrive all at once. Sometimes they build slowly — a few missed meals, a harder week, a parent who seems lonelier. Sometimes they follow a fall, a diagnosis or a hospital stay. Families in Greater Victoria often reach out when:

  • An older parent is finding everyday routines — meals, laundry, keeping the house in order — harder to keep up with
  • Someone is coming home after a hospital stay and the first weeks need practical help
  • A family caregiver is stretched thin and needs dependable time to rest
  • Memory changes mean a familiar face and a steady routine would make days easier
  • A person living alone would benefit from regular company and a friendly check-in
  • Bathing, dressing or moving around the home now needs a trained, respectful helper
  • Family members live on the mainland or further away and want care to feel better organized
  • Someone would feel more at ease with a companion going with them to medical appointments
  • Needs are changing, and the support in place no longer quite fits

Home support built around the person

We don’t start by filling a block of caregiver hours. We start by getting to know the person and what a good day looks like for them. Before any support is proposed, we learn about:

  • What they need help with — and what they’d rather keep doing themselves
  • Their daily routines and the way they like things done
  • Personal preferences, interests and what matters to them
  • Their goals for staying at home
  • The home itself and anything that affects safety there
  • Family members and friends who already help
  • Other professional or community support already in place
  • The kind of care worker who would be the right fit

That understanding shapes the individualized Care Plan and how we match a care worker — so support fits the person, not the other way around.

Home care in Victoria: common questions

What is home support?

Home support is practical, non-clinical help that makes life at home more manageable — things like meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, errands, companionship and help with daily routines.

What is the difference between home care and home support?

People use the terms in different ways. At FeatherKeep, home support means everyday practical help and companionship. Home care is the broader term we use for all of our non-clinical services, including personal care such as bathing and dressing. None of our services include nursing or other clinical care.

Can FeatherKeep support someone who already receives Island Health home support?

Yes, where appropriate. Private support can work alongside publicly funded services when someone needs additional, individualized help around everyday routines.

Can FeatherKeep help after someone comes home from hospital?

Yes. Hospital-to-Home & Recovery Support offers practical, non-clinical help — meals, household tasks, companionship and help with routines — while someone recovers. Medical care stays with the person’s healthcare team. See our Recovery at Home page for more.

Do you provide respite care in Victoria?

Yes. We accept respite requests from Greater Victoria. A care worker supports the person at home so a family caregiver can take a break. Respite is planned after assessment and priced on the level of care needed — see our Respite Care page.

Can FeatherKeep support someone living with dementia?

Yes. Dementia & Memory Support focuses on consistency, familiar routines and a calm, person-centred approach, based on assessment. It is non-clinical and does not include treatment.

Can someone help with bathing and dressing?

Yes, when Personal Care is included in the assessed Care Plan. This can cover help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility and eating, provided by appropriately qualified workers.

How does FeatherKeep choose a care worker?

We look at what the Care Plan requires. Only workers who meet the requirements for that support can be matched. Among them, we consider fit — such as schedule, continuity and the person’s preferences.

Can FeatherKeep accompany someone to a medical appointment?

Yes, as part of a Care Plan. A care worker can offer company and help keep track of what was discussed. Transportation is not included, and care workers don’t make medical decisions.

How much does private home care cost in Victoria?

Home Support, Companionship and Everyday Help visits are $129 for 2 hours, $177 for 3 hours, $236 for 4 hours, and $59 per hour for 5 hours or more. Personal Care is $65 per hour and Specialized Home Care is $69 per hour, each with a 2-hour minimum. Respite and Dementia & Memory Support are priced on the assessed level of care, and longer or overnight support is assessed and quoted individually. You see the exact price in your proposed Care Plan before you approve anything.

How do we get started?

Call a care coordinator or request a callback to discuss your needs and location. We review availability and pricing, complete an assessment and propose a care plan and arrangement for your approval. You can share further details securely online after the conversation where appropriate. We confirm your agreed support, schedule and price before care begins.

Care workers are currently available in Victoria. Requests in surrounding communities are reviewed after assessment for a suitable local worker match.

Medical care remains with the person’s healthcare team. Support excludes nursing and other clinical care, medication administration, newborn care, transportation and live-in care; 24-hour care is not guaranteed.

FeatherKeep is an independent private-pay provider, not affiliated with, endorsed by or contracted by Island Health, Royal Jubilee Hospital or Victoria General Hospital. Public eligibility and funding remain with the health authority; private care and schedules are arranged separately.
