Hospital-to-Home & Recovery Support in Nanaimo, BC
Leaving hospital does not necessarily mean everyday life immediately returns to normal. The relief of coming home is real — but so is the fatigue, the stiffness after surgery, and the realization that cooking, showering and getting to follow-up appointments all need more help than before.
Recovery support at home bridges that stretch with practical, non-clinical help, organized around the instructions the healthcare team has already given, and coordinated so family members know what’s covered and when.

Common moments families contact us
Whether the hospital stay was planned or sudden, these situations come up often:
- A parent is coming home after a hospital stay and lives alone
- Someone is booked for surgery and will have limited mobility for a while afterwards
- Family can’t be present throughout recovery because of work or distance
- Everyday routines — meals, laundry, getting washed — will be temporarily difficult
- There are follow-up appointments and it would help to have someone go along
- Several relatives are helping and it’s becoming hard to keep track of who does what
Support during recovery can include
Each plan is built around the person’s situation and their healthcare team’s instructions:
Home support
Meal preparation, laundry and light housekeeping while energy and mobility return.
Check-ins and companionship
Regular visits that provide company and notice how recovery is going.
Assessed personal support
Temporary help with showering, dressing and moving around the home, where assessed.
Appointment accompaniment
Company at follow-up appointments, on transport the family arranges, and help keeping track of what was discussed.
Working with existing instructions
Following everyday guidance from the healthcare team, such as activity or mobility precautions.
Family communication
Clear updates and coordination so everyone knows the plan.
Recovery support is priced on what the person is assessed as needing — for example, Personal Care at $65 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. You approve the price before support begins.
Who recovery support helps
- Adults returning home after a hospital admission
- People recovering from planned or unplanned surgery
- Anyone who lives alone and expects the first weeks home to be difficult
- Families coordinating several sources of support during recovery
A plan that changes as recovery does
If you can, contact us before the hospital stay ends. We’ll talk through the instructions the person has been given, how their home is laid out, and when family can help, then propose a Care Plan for you to review.
Needs during recovery often shift week to week. Visits can be more frequent at first and reduce as the person regains confidence, or continue as ongoing support if that’s needed. We follow up and adjust the plan with you along the way.

What recovery support doesn’t include
FeatherKeep doesn’t control or arrange hospital discharge. We don’t provide nursing, wound care, medication administration, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, clinical monitoring, transportation or medical decision-making.
Clinical care remains with the hospital and the person’s healthcare providers. We don’t claim to prevent readmission or improve clinical outcomes — our role is to help the transition back to everyday life at home feel more manageable.
Coming home in the Nanaimo area
Care workers are currently available in Nanaimo. We also accept requests in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, subject to local worker availability. All care is subject to assessment and a suitable local worker match.
If you or someone you care about is returning home after a stay or procedure at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital or another hospital, FeatherKeep can help coordinate non-clinical support for the transition home.
FeatherKeep is an independent private provider and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or contracted by Island Health or any health authority unless a specific future contractual relationship is established. Families may choose private home support alongside publicly funded services when additional individualized support is needed.
Hospital-to-home support in Nanaimo: questions families ask
When should we arrange support?
Ideally before the person leaves hospital or before a planned surgery. Support depends on assessment and care worker availability, so earlier contact gives more options.
What help is available after someone leaves hospital?
Everyday home support, check-ins and companionship, assessed personal support, appointment accompaniment and family coordination — all within one Care Plan.
Can someone go with the person to follow-up appointments?
Yes, when it’s part of the Care Plan and subject to availability. Transportation isn’t included — the care worker accompanies the person on transport the family arranges.
Can recovery support be short-term?
Yes. Support can be temporary and reduce as the person recovers, or continue if ongoing help is needed.
Can you help with bathing after surgery?
Yes, when personal care has been assessed and included. Care workers follow the precautions provided by the healthcare team.
Do you provide nursing, wound care or physiotherapy?
No. These are clinical services that remain with the person’s healthcare providers.
Are you part of the hospital discharge process?
No. FeatherKeep is independent. Families share the instructions they’ve received, and the Care Plan is built around them.
