Common reasons families arrange support after hospital
We hear from families in Greater Victoria when:
- A parent is being discharged and family can’t be there every day
- Someone is coming home after hip, knee or other surgery and will be less mobile for a while
- Cooking, laundry and housework have become temporarily difficult
- Washing and dressing need a hand until strength returns
- There are follow-up appointments to get to and keep track of
- Family members are trying to coordinate around work and other services
- The person lives alone and would benefit from someone checking in
Practical support during recovery at home
Support is planned for the recovery period and adjusted as the person gets stronger.
Settling in at home
Help getting the home ready and routines re-established in the first days back.
Meals and household tasks
Preparing simple meals, laundry, tidying and keeping essentials within easy reach.
Personal care, if assessed
Help with washing, dressing and toileting while mobility is limited.
Companionship and check-ins
Company, encouragement and a regular visit so the person isn’t alone all day.
Appointment accompaniment
Going with the person to follow-up appointments and helping keep track of what was said. Transportation is not included.
Coordination with family
Keeping family updated and the plan organized alongside existing services.
Planned around the recovery, not a fixed package
Recovery needs change quickly. A Care Assessment looks at what the person can and can’t do right now, any guidance the family has received from the hospital team, who else is helping and how long support is likely to be needed.
The Care Plan is built around that, often with more support at the start and less as the person regains independence. We follow the instructions the healthcare team has given the family; we don’t replace them.

Non-clinical support alongside your healthcare team
FeatherKeep provides non-clinical support only. We do not provide nursing, wound care, medication administration, clinical monitoring, physiotherapy or transportation, and we have no role in hospital discharge decisions. Those remain with the hospital and the person’s healthcare providers.
FeatherKeep is an independent private provider and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or contracted by Island Health. Private support can be arranged alongside any publicly funded home support the person receives.

Hospital-to-home support in Victoria: common questions
Can support be ready for the day someone comes home?
Tell us as early as you can — ideally before discharge. Timing depends on assessment and care worker availability, and we’ll be honest about what may be possible.
How long does recovery support usually last?
It varies. Some people need help for a couple of weeks after surgery; others need longer. The Care Plan can be reduced or ended as the person recovers.
Can you help with dressings or medications after surgery?
No. Wound care and medication administration are clinical tasks and stay with the person’s healthcare team. We focus on practical help and personal care within our non-clinical scope.
Do you drive people to follow-up appointments?
No. A care worker can accompany the person to appointments using their own arrangements, such as a taxi or family ride, but FeatherKeep does not provide transportation.
The hospital has arranged some home support. Can we add more?
Often, yes. Private support can sit alongside publicly funded services. FeatherKeep is independent and doesn’t affect eligibility for public services.
What does recovery support cost?
It depends on the support needed. Everyday help and companionship use Home Support rates ($129 for 2 hours, $177 for 3 hours, $236 for 4 hours, $59/hour for 5+ hours); Personal Care is $65/hour with a 2-hour minimum.
Is this only for older adults?
No. We support adults of any age recovering at home after a hospital stay or surgery.
