Personal Care at Home in Victoria, BC

Respectful, hands-on help with the personal routines that have become hard or unsafe to manage alone — so the person can stay at home with dignity.

Personal care covers the intimate, everyday tasks most of us never think about until they become difficult. A qualified care worker helps with bathing, dressing, toileting and moving around the home, following a plan built from an assessment of what the person actually needs.

When personal care becomes necessary

The need often becomes clear after a near-miss or a slow change. Common moments include:

  • Getting in and out of the shower or bath no longer feels safe
  • Dressing takes a long time or leaves the person exhausted
  • A partner is lifting or steadying someone and is worried about injuring either of them
  • Continence changes are affecting confidence and comfort
  • After a fall, getting up from a chair or bed has become difficult
  • Grooming and hygiene are slipping in a way that isn’t like the person

Personal care we can provide after assessment

Only tasks included in the person’s assessed Care Plan are provided, by care workers qualified for them.

Bathing and showering

Help washing, getting in and out safely and drying off, with privacy respected.

Dressing

Choosing clothes, putting them on and managing buttons, zips, socks and shoes.

Grooming

Hair care, shaving, oral care, skin moisturizing and nail care that isn’t clinical.

Toileting and continence

Help getting to the toilet, changing continence products and keeping comfortable.

Mobility and transfers

Steadying while walking at home and assisted transfers between bed, chair and toilet.

Eating assistance

Setting up meals, cutting food and encouraging eating and drinking at the person’s pace.

Personal Care is $65 per hour, with a 2-hour minimum.

Who personal care may help

  • Older adults who want to keep living at home safely
  • People living with a disability or long-term condition
  • Someone recovering strength after a hospital stay
  • People living with dementia who need prompting or hands-on help
  • Spouses or adult children who can no longer safely provide hands-on care

Why assessment comes first

Personal care is physical and personal, so we don’t guess. A Care Assessment looks at which routines need help, how much assistance is needed, mobility and transfers, the bathroom and bedroom set-up, preferences such as time of day, and anything that affects safety.

That information determines which tasks go in the Care Plan and which care worker can be matched. Only workers who meet the requirements for the support — for example, hands-on transfer support — are eligible. If needs change, the plan is reviewed rather than stretched.

Personal care is not nursing

FeatherKeep personal care is non-clinical. We don’t provide nursing, medication administration, wound care, injections, catheter care, clinical monitoring or transportation. The person’s doctor and healthcare team remain responsible for medical care.

If the assessment shows that clinical care is needed, we’ll say so, so the family can arrange it through the appropriate healthcare provider.

Personal care in Victoria: common questions

How much does personal care cost?

Personal Care is $65 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. Your proposed Care Plan shows the full schedule and price before you approve it.

Why is there a 2-hour minimum?

Personal care shouldn’t be rushed. Two hours allows time for bathing or showering, dressing and settling the person comfortably afterwards.

Can you help with transfers from bed to chair?

Yes, when transfer support is included in the assessed Care Plan. Only care workers who meet the requirement for hands-on transfers are matched to that support.

Do you give medications as part of personal care?

No. FeatherKeep does not administer medication. That remains with the person, their family or their healthcare team.

My mother is embarrassed about needing help to bathe. How do you handle that?

With patience and privacy. The assessment records her preferences — such as time of day or keeping covered — and we try to keep the same care worker so she isn’t explaining herself to new people.

Can personal care be combined with other help?

Yes. One Care Plan can include personal care alongside companionship, meals or light housekeeping.

How quickly can personal care start?

That depends on the assessment and care worker availability in your area. We’ll tell you honestly what may be possible after reviewing the request.
