Dementia & Memory Support at Home in Nanaimo, BC

Memory changes rarely arrive all at once. It might be a missed appointment, the kettle left on, or a favourite recipe that suddenly feels complicated. Through it all, the person is still very much themselves — with their own humour, history and ways of doing things.

Memory support at home is about protecting what still works: familiar surroundings, a predictable day and people they recognize, while giving the family more support and clearer communication as needs evolve.

Where families often find themselves

Every family’s experience of dementia is different. These are some of the situations we hear about:

  • Everyday routines — meals, getting ready, the day’s plans — are becoming harder to keep on track
  • Your parent is more content with company and seems unsettled after long stretches alone
  • A husband or wife has gradually become the main caregiver and is tiring
  • Adult children are trying to coordinate support from Nanaimo, the mainland or further away
  • The family caregiver needs regular time away without worrying about the day falling apart
  • You’d like more consistent updates on how things are going

What memory support can include

Support is shaped by the assessment and reviewed as needs change:

Companionship and engagement

Conversation, music, photographs and familiar activities that suit the person’s interests.

A predictable day

Help keeping to familiar routines for meals, rest and activities.

Everyday practical help

Meal preparation, light housekeeping and keeping the home familiar and easy to navigate.

Regular check-ins

Consistent visits that help notice changes and keep the family informed.

Respite for family

Time away for the spouse or relative who provides most of the care.

Family communication

Clear updates and one place to coordinate, so everyone works from the same information.

There’s no dementia surcharge. Pricing follows the care level the person is assessed as needing — for example, companionship visit rates, or Personal Care at $65 per hour (2-hour minimum) when hands-on help is part of the plan.

Who this support is for

  • People living with dementia or memory changes who want to remain at home
  • Spouses and partners who have become the main caregiver
  • Adult children coordinating care from nearby or from a distance
  • Families who want consistency, familiar routines and clearer communication

Consistency built into the plan

The Care Assessment explores who the person is — their past, preferences, best times of day and what tends to unsettle them — alongside the practical support needed. That becomes a Care Plan you review and approve.

Matching considers the plan’s requirements and fit with the person. Where possible, continuity and familiarity are considered when matching and coordinating ongoing support. We keep following up with the family and update the plan as needs change over time.

What memory support is — and isn’t

Dementia and memory support from FeatherKeep is non-clinical. We don’t diagnose or treat dementia, provide clinical dementia management or medical monitoring, or claim to slow or prevent decline.

We also can’t guarantee safety at all times. Medical care and diagnosis stay with the person’s healthcare providers.

Memory support for Nanaimo-area families

Care workers are currently available in Nanaimo. We also accept requests in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, subject to local worker availability. All care is subject to assessment and a suitable local worker match.

When the main caregiver is a spouse and the children live elsewhere on the Island or across the Strait, coordination matters as much as the visits. We’ll agree who receives updates and how, so nobody is left piecing things together.

Families may choose private home support alongside publicly funded services when additional individualized support is needed. FeatherKeep is a private provider; we don’t decide who is eligible for publicly funded care, and arranging support with us doesn’t change that eligibility.

Dementia support in Nanaimo: common questions

Can a person living with dementia be supported at home?

Often, yes — depending on their needs and what support can be arranged. The Care Assessment helps determine whether home support is appropriate and what it should include.

Can memory support give my spouse a break?

Yes. Respite can be part of the Care Plan, giving the main caregiver protected time while support continues at home.

How is a care worker matched?

Only workers who meet the Care Plan’s requirements can be matched. Among them, we consider fit, schedule and the person’s preferences.

Will my parent see the same care worker?

Where possible, continuity and familiarity are considered when matching and coordinating ongoing support. We can’t guarantee the same worker every visit, and we tell families in advance when there’s a change.

Can the Care Plan change as dementia progresses?

Yes. We follow up regularly and update the plan with you when needs change.

Does memory support cost more than other care?

No. Pricing follows the assessed care level, with no dementia surcharge.

Do you provide medical dementia care?

No. Our support is non-clinical. Diagnosis, treatment and medical monitoring remain with the person’s healthcare providers.
