Respite Care in Nanaimo, BC

Caring for a husband, a wife or a parent tends to grow a little at a time, until most of your week is organized around it. Your own appointments get pushed back, errands happen in a rush, and a full afternoon to yourself starts to feel unrealistic.

Respite is support for the person receiving care that creates protected time for the family caregiver. Someone suitable stays with them at home, following the plan you’ve agreed, so you can step away knowing the day carries on as it should.

Caregivers usually reach out when…

There’s no threshold you need to reach first. These are the kinds of situations Nanaimo families describe:

  • You’re a spouse providing care most days, and you haven’t had a regular break in months
  • You’re an adult child fitting care around a job, school runs or your own household
  • Your own medical or dental appointments keep getting postponed
  • Groceries, banking and other errands are squeezed into whatever time is left
  • You’re caring for someone living with dementia and they shouldn’t be left alone
  • You’d like a recurring break — the same afternoon every week — you can plan around

While you’re away

The support during respite depends entirely on what the person needs. It may include:

Company and reassurance

Someone to talk with, share an activity, or simply be there so the person isn’t alone.

Keeping the day on track

Meals, drinks and the usual daily rhythm, following the routines you’ve described.

Personal care, if assessed

Help with toileting, changing or mobility when that’s part of the person’s Care Plan.

Dementia-aware support

Calm, familiar routines for someone living with memory changes.

Light household help

Tidying up after a meal or keeping the kitchen in order during the visit.

A handover when you return

A short summary of how the time went, so you can pick up where things left off.

Respite doesn’t have a single price. It follows the care level the person is assessed as needing — companionship rates when company is the main need, Personal Care at $65 per hour (2-hour minimum) when hands-on help is required. You see the price before approving.

Who respite is designed for

  • Spouses and partners who provide day-to-day care at home
  • Adult children balancing employment with caring for a parent
  • Families supporting someone living with dementia
  • Caregivers who need a dependable, recurring break rather than an occasional favour

Matching respite to the person being cared for

The Care Assessment focuses on the person you care for: their routines, what helps them feel settled, and what support they need during the hours you’re away. That determines the care level, the type of worker and the price.

Once you approve the Care Plan, we match an eligible care worker. Where possible, continuity and familiarity are considered when matching and coordinating ongoing support. We check in with you after the first few sessions and adjust timing or support if needed.

The boundaries of respite support

Respite is non-clinical. During respite, care workers provide the support the assessed Care Plan covers, which may include companionship, practical help and personal care.

It doesn’t include nursing, medication administration, clinical monitoring, transportation or overnight care unless overnight support has been separately assessed.

Respite for Nanaimo-area families

Care workers are currently available in Nanaimo. We also accept requests in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, subject to local worker availability. All care is subject to assessment and a suitable local worker match.

Some caregivers are looking after a partner with no other relatives close by. A regular, planned break can make that arrangement more sustainable — we’ll work out a rhythm that suits both of you.

Families may choose private home support alongside publicly funded services when additional individualized support is needed. FeatherKeep is a private provider; we don’t decide who is eligible for publicly funded care, and arranging support with us doesn’t change that eligibility.

Respite care in Nanaimo: common questions

Can respite be booked on a recurring basis?

Yes. Many caregivers choose a standing weekly time. Recurring schedules are confirmed after assessment and depend on care worker availability.

While I’m away, how does the care worker spend the time?

They follow the Care Plan — keeping the person company, managing meals and routines, and providing assessed personal care if it’s included.

Is respite available for someone living with dementia?

Yes. The assessment looks at memory-related needs, routines and what helps the person stay settled, and matching takes those needs into account.

How is the level of respite support decided?

Through the Care Assessment. The support required — and so the price — follows the person’s assessed care level, not a fixed respite rate.

How much notice do you need?

As much as you can give. Support depends on assessment and care worker availability, so earlier requests usually mean more options.

Do you offer overnight respite?

Overnight or longer support is assessed and priced individually, and only offered where it can be arranged appropriately.

Can respite help with toileting or mobility?

Yes, if personal care is part of the assessed Care Plan and an appropriately qualified worker is matched.
