When a family caregiver needs a break

Most caregivers we hear from aren’t asking for a holiday. They need ordinary time back. For example:

  • You haven’t had more than an hour to yourself in weeks
  • You need to keep working, but can’t leave your partner or parent alone
  • You have your own medical appointments you keep postponing
  • Other family responsibilities — children, grandchildren, a second household — are being squeezed
  • The person you care for is living with dementia and needs someone with them
  • You’re exhausted, short-tempered or running on empty, and you know it isn’t sustainable
  • You want a regular, predictable break each week, not just emergency cover

What happens during a respite visit

The care worker follows the agreed Care Plan, with support shaped around the person’s needs and familiar routines.

Elderly Companionship & Social Connection

Conversation, shared interests and agreed check-ins, built around what the person enjoys.

Victoria Appointment Accompaniment

Accompaniment and help coordinating transport to appointments, errands and community activities where agreed in the plan. Transport arrangements are confirmed separately; FeatherKeep does not provide transportation or assume every worker drives.

Hourly Caregiver Relief & Household Help

Approved visits for meals, laundry and light household help. The schedule, visit duration and price are agreed after assessment; visits start at two hours.

Respite is priced on the level of care the person needs, confirmed after assessment — there’s no single flat respite rate.

Who respite care may help

  • Spouses and partners caring for someone at home
  • Adult children balancing work with caring for a parent
  • Families supporting someone living with dementia or a disability
  • Caregivers recovering from their own illness or surgery
  • Families who already have some publicly funded support but need more time

Respite planned around both people

Good respite means you can actually switch off. So we plan for the person receiving care — their routines, the support they need, what helps when they’re unsettled — and for you: when you need the time, how you’d like to hear from us and what would make leaving easier.

The level of support required determines the type of care worker matched and the price. If the person needs help with personal care or has significant memory changes, the plan reflects that.

Respite care in Victoria: common questions

How much does respite care cost?

Respite is priced on the assessed level of care. Companionship-level respite uses Home Support rates; respite that includes personal care uses the Personal Care rate. You see the exact price in the proposed Care Plan before approving anything.

How many hours can I book?

Visits start at two hours. Many caregivers choose a regular weekly block of three or four hours. Longer or overnight respite is assessed and quoted individually.

Can I book respite only now and then?

Yes. Respite can be regular or arranged around particular dates. A regular schedule usually makes it easier to keep the same care worker.

My husband has dementia and gets anxious with new people. Will this work?

We plan for that. The assessment covers what helps him feel settled, and we try to introduce the same care worker gradually and keep them consistent.

Do I need to be home during respite?

No. The point of respite is that you can leave. You’ll receive a short handover when you get back.

Can respite include help with toileting or changing?

Yes, when it’s part of the assessed Care Plan and provided by an appropriately qualified care worker.

We already have Island Health home support. Can we add private respite?

Often, yes. Private respite can be arranged alongside publicly funded services. FeatherKeep is independent and doesn’t affect eligibility for public services.
