Personal Care at Home in White Rock, BC

Getting into the shower, doing up buttons, steadying yourself on the way to the bathroom — these are the moments where someone can start to feel they’re losing ground, even when the rest of life at home is going well.

Personal care is respectful, hands-on help with those routines, given the way the person prefers, so they can keep living at home with their dignity and habits intact.

When everyday routines start to need a hand

Families often notice the change before it’s said out loud:

  • Showers have become less frequent because getting in and out of the tub feels risky
  • Dressing takes much longer, or the same outfit is worn several days running
  • A spouse has been helping with bathing and it’s becoming physically hard for them
  • Getting up from a chair or bed needs a steady arm
  • Grooming — shaving, hair, nails — has slipped
  • Eating well has become harder without some help or encouragement

Personal routines we can help with

Only the activities identified in the person’s assessment are included, and always at their pace.

Bathing and showering

Help getting in and out, washing and drying, with privacy and warmth in mind.

Dressing

Choosing clothes and help with fastenings, footwear and layers, leaving the person to do what they can.

Grooming

Hair, shaving, oral care, skin moisturising and the small things that help someone feel like themselves.

Toileting

Discreet help with toileting and continence routines.

Mobility and transfers

Steadying support moving around the home and getting in and out of bed or a chair, following any guidance from their healthcare team.

Mealtimes

Preparing food the way they like it and help with eating where assessed.

Personal Care is $65 per hour, with a 2-hour minimum per visit.

Who personal care may help

  • Older adults who want to stay at home but need help with bathing or dressing
  • People living with a disability or long-term condition
  • Someone whose spouse can no longer safely manage the physical side of care
  • People who need temporary help after an illness or hospital stay

Help that respects how the person likes things done

Personal care is private. Before anything starts, we want to know how the person likes their routines done — morning or evening shower, what they can manage themselves, what makes them uncomfortable, and any guidance already given by their doctor, occupational therapist or care team.

We also consider the home: the bathroom layout, stairs, and whether equipment like a shower chair or grab bars is already in place. The Care Plan brings that together, and the care worker follows it. As abilities change, we review the plan with the person and family.

Personal care is not nursing

FeatherKeep personal care is non-clinical. It does not include nursing, wound care, medication administration, injections, catheter care, clinical assessment or medical treatment.

The person’s doctor and healthcare team remain responsible for medical care. Where they’ve given guidance — for example on transfers — the Care Plan reflects it.

Personal care in White Rock homes

Care workers are currently available in White Rock. All care is subject to assessment and a suitable local worker match.

White Rock homes range from hillside houses with steps and split levels to apartments and condos near the waterfront. Layout affects how bathing and mobility support is planned, so we ask about the home during assessment.

Some families use private support alongside publicly funded home support from their health authority, when they want more hours, more flexibility or a particular kind of help. FeatherKeep is an independent private provider. We have no affiliation, partnership or contract with Fraser Health or any health authority, and we don’t decide eligibility for publicly funded care.

Personal care in White Rock: what families want to know

What personal care activities can someone get help with?

Bathing and showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility and transfers around the home, and help at mealtimes — whichever are identified in the person’s assessment and included in their Care Plan.

How do you work out how much help is needed?

Through the Care Assessment. We ask what the person can do on their own, where they need a hand, their routines and preferences, the home set-up and any existing guidance from their healthcare team.

Is personal care the same as nursing care?

No. Personal care is non-clinical help with everyday routines. It doesn’t include nursing, wound care, medication administration or medical treatment.

How much does personal care cost?

$65 per hour with a 2-hour minimum per visit. You see the full price in the proposed Care Plan before anything is arranged.

My dad is uncomfortable with help bathing. How is that handled?

Gently and at his pace. We ask about preferences up front — including whether he’d be more comfortable with a male or female care worker — and the care worker encourages him to do what he can himself. Preferences are respected where availability allows.

Can personal care be combined with companionship or home support?

Yes. One Care Plan can cover several kinds of support, so a visit might include help showering followed by a meal and some company.

Can personal care continue if needs increase?

Plans are reviewed as needs change. If needs go beyond what non-clinical support can safely provide, we’ll say so honestly and suggest the family speak with the person’s healthcare team.
