Respite Care in White Rock, BC

If you care for your husband, wife or parent at home, you probably know the feeling: every appointment, errand or hour of sleep has to be planned around someone else.

Respite is support for the person you care for that gives you protected time back. A care worker spends those hours with them at home, so you can leave the house — or stay and rest — knowing the support carries on.

Who usually asks about respite

Respite isn’t only for crisis points. Families tend to reach out when:

  • You’re a spouse who has quietly become a full-time caregiver over the last few years
  • You’re an adult child fitting a parent’s care around a job and your own household
  • Your partner is living with dementia and can’t comfortably be left alone
  • You need a few clear hours for your own doctor, dentist or banking
  • You’d like a regular afternoon each week — for grandchildren, a class, or a walk by the water
  • You’re tired in a way that a single night’s sleep doesn’t fix

What happens while you’re away

Respite isn’t one fixed service. The care worker provides the support your family member has been assessed as needing, so their day continues as normally as possible.

Company and reassurance

Someone to sit with, talk to and do familiar things with, so the time apart feels comfortable for them too.

Their usual routine

Lunch at the usual time, the afternoon programme they like, a short walk if that’s part of their day.

Household help

Light meal preparation, tidying up and keeping things in order while you’re out.

Personal care, where assessed

Help with toileting, changing or mobility when the Care Plan includes it, by an appropriately qualified care worker.

Memory-aware support

A calm, patient approach that follows the person’s cues, if they live with memory changes.

A clear handover

A short note when you return about how the time went and anything you should know.

There’s no single respite price. Respite is priced on the level of care your family member is assessed as needing — for example, companionship-level visits or Personal Care at $65 per hour with a 2-hour minimum.

Getting the handover right

Leaving someone you care for, even for an afternoon, is easier when you trust the person stepping in. So we start with what you already know: their routines, preferences, what unsettles them, what helps, and what you usually do at each point in the day.

That becomes the Care Plan, and the care worker follows it. Respite can be a one-off block for an appointment or a recurring arrangement — the same afternoon each week, for instance — and it can grow or change as your situation does.

What respite care doesn’t include

Respite care from FeatherKeep is non-clinical. It does not include nursing, medication administration, wound care, clinical monitoring or transportation.

We don’t provide live-in or guaranteed 24-hour care. Longer daytime or overnight respite is only arranged after assessment and when suitable care workers are available.

Respite for White Rock families

Care workers are currently available in White Rock. All care is subject to assessment and a suitable local worker match.

Many White Rock caregivers are spouses in their seventies or eighties caring for a partner at home, and some have adult children further away in the Lower Mainland or beyond. Respite can be arranged with the caregiver, an adult child, or both together.

Some families use private support alongside publicly funded home support from their health authority, when they want more hours, more flexibility or a particular kind of help. FeatherKeep is an independent private provider. We have no affiliation, partnership or contract with Fraser Health or any health authority, and we don’t decide eligibility for publicly funded care.

Respite care in White Rock: common questions

Can respite be arranged every week?

Yes. Many families set up a recurring block — the same morning or afternoon each week — so the caregiver can plan around it. Regular times are confirmed after assessment and depend on care worker availability.

What does the care worker do while I’m out?

They provide the support set out in the Care Plan: company, the usual routine, light household help and, where assessed, personal care. The aim is for the day to feel normal for the person you care for.

Can respite help if my spouse is living with dementia?

Yes. Respite is often arranged for families living with dementia. The care worker follows the person’s routines and cues, and we try to keep the same worker so they become a familiar face.

Do I have to leave the house?

No. Some caregivers go out; others rest in another room, garden or catch up on paperwork. The time is yours to use however helps.

How much does respite cost?

Respite doesn’t have its own rate. It’s priced on the level of care assessed — for example, Personal Care is $65 per hour with a 2-hour minimum. You see the full price before approving anything.

How much notice do you need?

As much as you can give. Requests are reviewed after assessment and depend on care worker availability, so we can’t promise short-notice cover, but we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.

Can respite be used alongside publicly funded home support?

Yes. Families sometimes add private respite on top of publicly funded services. FeatherKeep is independent and isn’t connected with Fraser Health or any health authority.
